The Cape Breton Partnership, through its Creative Economy Development Service and Cape Breton Film Office, is working with industry and training partners to grow a skilled, local workforce ready to support the Island’s expanding film sector.

The Cape Breton Futures in Film Certification brings together a series of training opportunities designed to introduce participants to the industry, build practical skills, and connect them to real opportunities on set while receiving practical training certification.

Through the Cape Breton Futures in Film Certification, participants can:

  • Gain industry-recognized training
  • Build practical, job-ready skills
  • Connect with instructors and industry professionals
  • Access pathways to employment on local productions

Whether you are exploring a new career path or looking to build on existing experience, the certifications provide a clear and supported entry point into the film industry in Unama’ki – Cape Breton and beyond!

Film Industry Orientation – April 30, 2026

Your first step into the film industry begins with the Film Industry Orientation Course, provided by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 849.

This introductory training provides a practical overview of working on a film set, including:

  • Phases of production
  • Crew roles and departments
  • On-set etiquette and communication
  • Safety practices and expectations
  • Employment pathways within the industry

Participants who complete this course receive a Certificate of Completion from IATSE Local 849, a recognized starting point for working in film and television production.


Cape Breton Film Accelerator Program – Spring 2026

Participants will build their skills through the Cape Breton Film Accelerator Program, delivered in partnership with Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and funded by the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration (LSI), and the Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage.

This program focuses on hands-on, job-ready training across three key areas:

  • Production Assistant
  • Grip & Electric
  • Locations Audio

Each course of the program includes 24 to 36 hours of training, combining classroom learning with practical experience using professional equipment. Participants will also have the opportunity to gain on-set experience with productions filming in Unama’ki – Cape Breton, providing real-world exposure to industry environments.

Seats for this program will be limited, and applicants must meet program eligibility requirements for enrollment.
