(Richmond County, NS) – The Cape Breton Partnership, together with our partners at the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, and the Workers’ Compensation Board of Nova Scotia was pleased to recognize two industry recipients of the eighth annual Safety First in Cape Breton Awards at two small in-person ceremonies which took place in late August.
The Safety First in Cape Breton Committee is pleased to offer its congratulations to Landry Brothers Limited in Louisdale who took home the Small Business Trailblazer Award, and to WINMAR Cape Breton in Lennox Passage who was awarded the Safety Culture Champion Award.
“While we were so happy to be able to recognize the recipients at this year’s virtual symposium in June, it was a special moment to be able to take the time and recognize them in-person for all that they do to keep safety at the forefront of their businesses for their employees and customers,” said Carla Arsenault, President & CEO of the Cape Breton Partnership who presented both businesses with their awards.
“Health and safety is a key priority for these two businesses, and it’s great to see the important work they are doing to promote and foster a strong and dedicated culture of safety,” added Arsenault. “It was an honour to congratulate them in person and thank them for creating a safer Cape Breton – Unama’ki, which will help to strengthen our economy.”

Requirements to become a member of the Cape Breton Partnership’s Board of Directors include:
- Commitment to the vision, mission and goals of the Cape Breton Partnership;
Serve on the Board and its committees for a three-year term, attend meetings (quarterly https://bit.ly/CBPartnership-Board-Nomination-2021
- Board meetings, one strategic planning session) and represent the Cape Breton Partnership when requested;
- Demonstrate leadership in the Cape Breton – Unama’ki business community;
- Provide guidance and direction to the organization based on knowledge and experience;
- Be an Investor with the Cape Breton Partnership.
The Partnership’s Board Governance Committee will review nominations to select individuals. Those selected will be contacted in advance of the three-year-term start date set for October 2021. The Cape Breton Partnership is committed to equity and diversity in all its appointments and activities.

Sydney, NS – The Cape Breton Partnership, together with the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market, is excited to introduce the “Pop-up Bistro”, a new initiative that will offer food and beverage vendors the opportunity to participate in the weekly Saturday Market’s food-court area and make their tasty creations available to market-goers.
“We are excited to partner on this initiative and give local vendors in the food and beverage industry a chance to connect with their community, while promoting and marketing their business in a new and different way,” said Carla Arsenault, President & CEO of the Cape Breton Partnership.
The “Pop-up Bistro” is curated with the goal of showcasing a variety of vendors over the next several weeks while giving customers a chance to experience a variety of cuisines and products.
“This is a terrific offering for the Market and its customers and we hope to bring an array of vendors and flavours to customers in the local community,” said Brenda Donahue, Chair of the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market.
The “Pop-up Bistro” takes place weekly on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market in Downtown Sydney, and is available to the local business community in the food and beverage industry. The $100+HST fee includes a booth, signage, access to the commercial Market Kitchen and marketing/promotion.

Cape Breton Island, N.S. – As a number of major public infrastructure projects get underway in Cape Breton, the Cape Breton Partnership is proud to be launching the Building Tomorrow campaign.
Developed in collaboration with partners at the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education, Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council, and more, the campaign aims to recognize, celebrate, and inform local infrastructure developments on the Island. Ongoing and upcoming major public projects include the NSCC Marconi Campus relocation, expansions of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, New Waterford Community Hub, Northside Health Complex, and Glace Bay Hospital.
“The Province of Nova Scotia is investing over a billion dollars in our Island over the next several years through these projects, with an unprecedented opportunity for lasting impact and benefit for our business community and residents,” says Carla Arsenault, President & CEO of the Cape Breton Partnership. “Hundreds of Cape Bretoners will be able to build their careers due to these projects, kicking off a new era of development capabilities for the Island. An entirely new generation of workers in the construction sector will become trained and receive valuable experiences and skills from these projects, becoming a catalyst for the revitalization of our workforce and our communities across Unama’ki – Cape Breton.”
The campaign will feature the Building-Tomorrow.ca website with a number of resources focused on sharing opportunities for work and training in the construction industry, supplier and business opportunities, as well as general information and updates on the progress. The campaign was developed by local agency Anchored Ideas.
“The local infrastructure being developed and improved on the Island will be great assets to the community, and that’s only a fraction of the benefits these projects will offer,” says Jeremy Martell, Community Engagement Manager for the Cape Breton Partnership. “Whether you currently work in the construction industry or are looking to start your career; whether you are a large business or a small one, these projects have opportunities available to all areas of Unama’ki – Cape Breton.”
As the campaign continues to roll out, additional activities and events will be held both online and in-person, including community engagement sessions, work and training information workshops, and information sessions for the local business community.

Cape Breton Island, NS – The Cape Breton Partnership, together with the five municipalities in Cape Breton (Cape Breton Regional Municipality, the Counties of Inverness, Richmond and Victoria, and the Town of Port Hawkesbury) are asking businesses to fill out a survey about the impact of municipal red tape with the goal of reducing it, including by aligning municipal regulations where it makes sense.
“Municipalities across Cape Breton are working together to make it easier to do business in Cape Breton, whether that’s by modernizing bylaws, providing a one-stop shop for event planners or through our ambitious Regional Land Use planning project,” said Leanne MacEachen, Chief Administrative Officer, Municipality of the County of Victoria. “It’s critical our work remains rooted in the needs of Cape Breton businesses which is why we are again turning to them to ask where we should focus our shared work.”
The survey is part of the Regulatory Modernization Pilot Project – a partnership between the Island’s five municipalities and the provincial Office of Regulatory Affairs and Service Effectiveness. The survey seeks to identify pain points in the regulatory environment by improving the quality of new and existing regulation and reducing red tape to make it easier to grow the economy and for businesses to operate.
“The Partnership is happy to support this initiative and our municipal and government partners as they endeavour to make it easier for business owners to work, live and invest in Cape Breton – Unama’ki,” said Carla Arsenault, President & CEO of the Cape Breton Partnership. “These supports will help to grow our economy and create a more prosperous and thriving Cape Breton now and in the future.”
Business customers of one or more of Cape Breton – Unama’ki’s municipalities, are invited to take part in this survey, the data collected will help improve regulation and customer service during the next phase of the pilot partnership.
The survey will take approximately 12 minutes to complete and respondents have a chance to win a terrific prize for their business. Interested businesses are asked to fill out the survey and include contact information at the bottom to be entered in a draw to win a business planning and promotion package from the Cape Breton Partnership.
The lucky winner will receive:
- A one-on-one session with our Business Planning Advisor, who will review your current business plan with you, or help you build a new one.
- A promotion package, which includes social media promotion on our channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn), a feature in the monthly Partnership Pulse e-newsletter and space on a digital billboard located in the CBRM, with 22,000 vehicles passing daily, for an entire month.
