Workplace Health and Safety Champions to be celebrated at 2024 Safety First in Cape Breton SymposiumMay 1, 2024

(Unama’ki – Cape Breton) – Champions,leaders, and allies in the Health and Safety industry will be recognized at the annual Safety First in Cape Breton Awards, set for Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at the Membertou Trade & Convention Centre at the 2024 Safety First in Cape Breton Symposium.

The awards recognize individuals, businesses and committees who support building a strong culture of occupational health and safety in workplaces across Unama’ki – Cape Breton, and who go above and beyond the call of duty to innovate, continuously improve, and make a difference.

On behalf of the Cape Breton Partnership, event partners at the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, WCB Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Power, and award sponsor at Protocase, the following Safety First in Cape Breton Award recipients have been recognized for the following awards:

  • Engagement Ally & Safety Culture Champion Award winners:
    • Gary Simms, Health & Safety Manager, Louisbourg Seafoods
    • Kelly Young, Recreation Coordinator, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Shannex
  • Young Advocate Award:
    • Mairibeth Reilly, Recreation Coordinator, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Shannex
  • Innovation Expert Award:
    • Russell White, Health Care Construction Inspector, Build Right Nova Scotia

This year’s Safety First in Cape Breton Symposium is set to welcome delegates to the Membertou Trade & Convention Centre for an inspirational day of networking, learning, and finding ways we can all make a difference in making Unama’ki – Cape Breton the safest place to do business. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from industry leaders, visit a trade show, and hear from fascinating keynote speakers, enjoy a panel discussion, and more.

It’s our pleasure to acknowledge and the good work people are doing to ensure everyone goes home safely at the end of the day,” said Blaise MacNeil, Safety Advisor, Awareness and Outreach with LSI, and Co-Chair of the Safety First in Cape Breton Committee.

The Safety First in Cape Breton Symposium is the only event of its kind in Unama’ki – Cape Breton and is committed to making the Island the safest place to work and do business by prioritizing physical, psychosocial, and mental health of the workforce in our region.
