The Cape Breton Special Events Task Force (CB SETF) is a one-stop-shop approach to guiding special event and festival organizers through regulatory processes.
In 2019, the Nova Scotia Office of Regulatory Affairs and Service Effectiveness held stakeholder sessions across Unama’ki – Cape Breton as part of a Regulatory Modernization Pilot. These sessions revealed that the regulatory process can be particularly challenging for local festivals and special events. Starting in the spring of 2020, the Office of Regulatory Affairs and Service Effectiveness partnered with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, the Municipalities of the Counties of Inverness, Richmond, and Victoria, the Town of Port Hawkesbury, and the Cape Breton Partnership to address this challenge.
The Cape Breton Special Events Task Force brings together regulators from various government departments to consult with special event organizers. This allows the task force to provide organizers with guidance on policies, permits, and other regulations. It also means that event organizers can learn about requirements in a broad range of areas without needing to meet with each department individually.
The CB SETF currently consists of representatives from Alcohol and Gaming, the Cape Breton Regional Police Services, CBRM Emergency Management, the Department of Justice, the Eastern District Planning Commission, Emergency Health Services, Nova Scotia Environment, Nova Scotia Health Authority, the Office of the Fire Marshall, Parks Canada, and the RCMP.
The CB SETF is a resource for both new and existing special events and festivals across the Island.
