Cross-Training and Skills Development Lead to Longer Employment, Increased Income
Cape Breton Island, NS – New resources are being made available to Cape Breton’s tourism-focused businesses, to expand employee cross-training and skills development to assist with meeting the demands of visitors who are coming earlier to Cape Breton Island and staying later. The initiative, supported by the Government of Canada, the Province of Nova Scotia and tourism partners will assist the long-term sustainable health of the tourism economy.
The Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) and the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council (NSTHRC) are working with regional industry partners and business groups to provide industry operators with toolkits to improve human resources practices, deliver service excellence training and provide access to apply to a wage subsidy, intended to support labour costs related to operating outside the traditional tourism season. Regional partners for the program on Cape Breton Island are the Cape Breton Partnership and Destination Cape Breton.
“The Cape Breton Partnership is proud to be a delivery partner on this program for the benefit of our Island’s tourism operators,” says Carla Arsenault, President & CEO of the Cape Breton Partnership. “The Cape Breton experience is second to none, and that is largely due to the expertise of our businesses and dedicated workforce. Our hope is that this program will grow our tourism operators’ business capacity and enhance employee skillsets.”
Terry Smith, CEO of Destination Cape Breton, says, “This seasonality initiative is in complete alignment with the work Destination Cape Breton and tourism operators have been doing to extend our shoulder seasons and build our winter season. Additionally, it has the potential to help alleviate workforce shortages for participating operators.”
In addition to the resources listed above, businesses will be connected to ongoing labour research activities and data, along with support services, to maximize employee attraction in areas with labour shortages.
Operators interested in participating in the program or those who would like more information should call the Cape Breton Partnership at 902-562-0122 or email info@capebretonpartnership.com.

June 24, 2019 // Franchising.com // Mississauga, Ontario – FlannelJax’s, an axe throwing and recreation sports experience franchise headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, announced plans to open a new customer care center in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The center will streamline inquiries to better serve all FlannelJax’s customers as well as create valuable new jobs.
The new customer care center will open in mid-July at 1290 Kings Road in Sydney. The center will handle inbound calls for FlannelJax’s current and future locations, as well as online messages through FlannelJax’s website. Representatives will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. to book axe throwing events, handle inquiries and provide additional service for FlannelJax’s customers.
“The creation of the customer care center will be beneficial for FlannelJax’s customers and operators, as well as the Sydney community,” said Stephen Schober, CEO of FlannelJax’s. “Our representatives will provide unparalleled service to our customers while allowing our franchise owners and their staff to focus on running the daily operations of the business and providing the best possible customer experience. We will also be able to provide valuable jobs to qualified service representatives in the Sydney area.”
The customer care center has already recruited an experienced manager for the location to lead operations and is now in the process of recruiting five to seven customer service representatives. As the business continues to grow and expand, the customer care center plans to add upwards of 30 employees over the next five years. A job fair seeking customer service representatives will be held on Monday, June 24 at the Holiday Inn at 300 Esplanade in Sydney.
One of the factors for FlannelJax’s selecting Sydney as the customer care center location is the high number of experienced call center agents in the area. FlannelJax’s worked with the Cape Breton Partnership in the planning and development of the center. The Cape Breton Partnership is an organization that unites businesses and communities across the Cape Breton region with the goal of driving the local economy forward.
“As Cape Breton’s economic development organization, we are excited to see a growing company chose our island as a place to do business,” said Cape Breton Partnership President & CEO Carla Arsenault. “We were able to connect FlannelJax’s to the resources they needed to expand here, and the jobs created as a result will directly benefit our local economy.”

Cape Breton, NS – The Nova Scotia Quality of Life Survey is still active in communities province-wide for two more weeks. While over 10,000 surveys have been completed online and submitted by mail, Engage Nova Scotia expects there are a number of people who have intentions to fill it out and may need an extra prompt. Survey participation closes on July 5, 2019.
With this survey, participants are helping to build a more complete picture of what matters to Nova Scotians. In the fall of 2019, a Quality of Life Report will be created for each unique region of the province. By filling out the survey, participants are helping to ensure that issues most important to the health and wellbeing of Nova Scotians, their families and their communities receive better attention.
“Traditionally, much of the information we use to make decisions that affect our daily lives are based on economic data. Those data are not wrong – they are just incomplete,” Danny Graham, Chief Engagement Officer of Engage Nova Scotia, explains. “With this survey, you are helping us build a more complete picture of what matters to Nova Scotians.”
For Nova Scotians who would like help filling their survey out, lack access to a computer, or who did not receive an invitation and would like an online code or paper copy, all of these resources are available local libraries across Cape Breton Island. Similarly, the Strait Area and Marconi NSCC campuses have surveys and supports available.
Engage Nova Scotia hopes residents will encourage anyone who has received an invitation to complete the survey to do so before the closing date. If you did not receive a survey invitation and would like to participate, please contact Engage Nova Scotia at 902-407-2582 or survey@engagenovascotia.ca. Participants who submit their completed surveys prior to July 5 will be entered for a chance to win one of 25 Sobeys gift cards (valued at $400 each).
